Artillery
During the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars which swept
Europe between 1792 and 1815, the small professional
armies of the eighteenth century quickly gave way to
large national armies composed of draftees. These wars
saw the rise of artillery to a preeminent battlefield
position. But how was it employed? How did artillery
batteries behave on the field of battle and how were they
able to function during the confusion of combat?

- Wellington's
Dispatches
These
dispatches are from the original 1837 editions published
by Clowes, London. They give a fascinating insight into
the nature of British army operations in the Peninsula
and Waterloo Campaigns during the Napoleonic Wars. They
also reveal a thoughtful, yet stern Arthur Wellesley,
whose many concerns as Commander-in-Chief included the
wants and needs of his officers and the welfare of his
men. Please note that Wellington's headquarters would use
French when communicating with foreign armies such as the
Dutch, Austrians, and many others.
